A church record with the spouse AND her maiden name. So now we know that James and Sarah Windle were married in Dewsbury in 1807. We can now look for James' birth - anywhere from 1777 - 1787. Unfortunately, I found 2 references for this James - one born in 1783 and one born in 1781. Also, this is a contributed IGI record, which means that it is much less reliable than a church record. But with John's help we now know that our James is son of John Autee born abt 1783 because his age of 54 on 1841 Census, makes 1783 his birth year. Well that was easy, I found the whole family. However, this information comes from the IGI which I have found only useful as a guide. There are a lot of errors on the IGI because all of the information has been submitted by individuals, rather than transcription of church records which are much more reliable. At the same time, we should be able to verify this info quite easily. Note that Edwin Auty died in New York. So maybe Frank and his brother came to the USA through New York together and then for some reason went their separate ways. Now we know that James & Martha were married in the Dewsbury area of England (which is where all Autys are from) in 1840. So, just to be sure let me verify this. Well, I found their marriage in 1839 and even better, I found his family on the 1881 census. So now we know that James Auty was born in 1811, born in Earlsheaton, Yorkshire. Dewsbury was a large market where people came to trade their wares. It was originally settled by the French, who were often in the clothing trade. The family spelt their name Autie, however over time the name was changed (Saxonized) to Auty. There are other spellings as well. This record is especially useful as we see their son Joseph at home - which confirms the above family info that Frank had a younger brother named Joseph. Note, this James was born in Dec of 1810 and the 1881 census was taken in March, so this James Awtey is most likely the proper James. In March of 1881, this James would have only been 70 which is the age on the census. This is now a church record, so we know for sure that this person and dates are accurate, however note the spelling has changed to a very rare spelling - Awtey. I have found many with Autey related to me and a few with Awty, but none so far spelled this way. The best news is that we have his parents - James and Sarah. Back in the early 1800's most Autys named their children after themselves and their parents, so just as you have Frank Sr. and Frank Jr., you now have James Sr. and James Jr. Also, note if you go back to the earlier family, the eldest daughter is named Sarah. Sarah was a common name, but I suspect she was named after her grandmother. This is very interesting - we know that this Frank Auty was born in 1859 in England. So now you know how this family came to be in Canada. Frank Sr. lived in England and moved to Canada before 1883. For some reason he settled in Cornwall, Ontario and eventually married Emma Eccles. On his marriage certificate, he put his parents names as James Auty and Martha Auty.
