Whilst attempting to separate several Charles AUTY's born c1842, I applied for a death certificate which whilst giving no more useful information by way of family relationships mentioned the fact that an inquest had been held.
This resulted of a search of the local paper proved him not to be the ancestor I was looking for but gives us the following story:

Fatal Accident at Dewsbury
On Monday afternoon, a lad named Joshua Auty, residing at Westtown, fell from a building at Batley Carr, two storeys high, on which he was working, and received severe internal injuries. He was conveyed home, and Dr P. Thornton called, but he expired on Wednesday evening. - On Thursday evening, an inquest was held on the body, before Mr Thomas Taylor, coroner, at the Mount Pleasant Inn, Westtown. Mr Oxley was appointed foreman. - Ellen Auty, widow, said she lived in Senior Street, and the deceased, who was sixteen years of age, was her nephew. He had been apprenticed to the joinering business about twelve months. He went to his work on Monday, at noon, in good health; about half-past four the same afternoon he was brought home by his master, Samuel Blackburn. The deceased complained of pain internally. Dr Peter Thornton attended him. The deceased did not improve at all, but gradually became weaker, and died on Wednesday, at five o'clock p.m. He continued conscious up to his death. No limbs were broken. - By a juryman: He could not tell her how the accident happened. - Thomas Bairstow, a resident in Batley, said he was a joiner. The deceased and witness had been employed together for about six months. They went on Monday morning to put the roofing on to three houses at Batley Carr. The deceased had been on buildings before, but he had not experienced any dizziness when he was on the roof. The deceased went to fetch some nails, and walked on the outside wall to the place where they were, and when he had got back to where witness was working with the articles, he put his foot on the "break course," slipped, and fell to the ground, a distance of seven or eight yards. What caused the deceased to fall was that where he put his foot on the "break course" there were two bricks loose. Witness had told the deceased not to walk on the outside wall several times. - A verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned.

During the American Civil War 1861-65 Auty's served on both sides fighting for or against the effort by Southern states to secede from the Union and to preserve a society based on slave labour.
This list identifies some of those individuals and the side on which they fought, although it does not give ages or birth place, the identification of the regiment and company to which they belong is a possible starting point for further investigation

The Reform Act of 1832 extended the right to vote to propertied adult males.
It created a uniform voting qualification extended to borough householders paying an annual rent of 10. In the counties it was extended from the 40s freeholders, to both leaseholders for 20 years and tenants at will paying 50 rent.

It was a crispy, cold winter's day when Samuel Auty decided that he wanted to get married. In fact it was on Christmas Day December 25, 1911. He married Eleanor Louisa Goulden who was a spinster age 25. Sam, himself was 26 years. They both lived in Huslet, Sam liiving with his parents on Houghton Street, while Eleanor lived on Disreali Street. Samuel worked as a Ironmonger's Warehouseman and Eleanor, believe it or not was a Printer's Folder. ( I wonder if that some how inspired the Auty family to become Printers, who knows). Samuel father George Auty was a Coachman (domestic), but unfortunetly had died in previous years. John Henry Goulden, father of Eleanor was a Bricklayer.
Samuel Auty and Eleanor Louisa Goulden married at the United Methodist Church in Dewsbury Road, Hunslet, in the Counties of Leeds, Yorkshire.
At the wedding was Robert Goulden and William Denison who witness the marriage. Joseph Agden was the Minster and the Register was Henry Snowden.

JOHN BRYANT, theft: simple grand larceny, 17 Feb 1819.
491. JOHN BRYANT was indicted for stealing, on the 16th of February, two bushels of beans, value 14 s., the goods of Thomas Dancer.
THOMAS DANCER. I live at Southgate, and am a coach-master, the prisoner was three years in my service. For sometime past I observed my horses look very thin, which induced me to suspect him - I never locked my corn up. The prisoner was brought to me by Auty, with two bushels and a half of beans. I told him he was a pretty rascal; he said,
"Yes, master, I am indeed. I have done for myself now, and the d - I must have tempted me to do it.
"I asked him several times to tell me who it was that received them. He said, No; if he had a hundred necks, he would be hung by them all first. I compared the beans with mine, they are the same. He had the care of them.
JOSEPH AUTY. I am a patrol. On the 16th of February, about half-past eleven o'clock at night, I and Cook were on duty on Mr. Dancer's premises - two persons came along from the stables; Cook wished them a good night - nobody answered, which excited my suspicion. I followed, and overtook the prisoner with a sack on his head, which contained the beans. He begged hard to be let go, saying it was his first offence.
Prisoner's Defence. I found them in the road.
GUILTY. Aged 38.
Confined One Month, and Publicly Whipped.
First Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Common Sergeant.

FATAL ACCIDENT TO THE DEWSBURY AND LEEDS CARRIER
On Wednesday forenoon last, Benjamin Auty, the carrier between Dewsbury and Leeds, met with an accident of so serious a character as put a termination to his life in the evening of the same day. He left home in the forenoon with his wagon, which contained goods amounting to 18 cws, and after passing through the High-street of Dawgreen, he turned the horses head down the steep incline past Edward Autys spirit store, with the object of getting down to the Huddersfield Road. The steepness of the road, and the fact that it was covered with hard-trodden snow, in some places as smooth as ice, rendered the descent exceedingly dangerous. When he had reached the vaults of Mr. Auty, he found that the wheels of his wagon began to slide in such a manner as to annoy the horse very much. Under the idea that he might be able to steady the animal and render him less frightened, he took hold of its head, and in this way he was enabled to proceed a little further on his way. The horse, which is a very spirited animal, soon renewed its restlessness, occasioned not unlikely by the wagon sliding violently against it, and plunged forward at a rapid pace for about 90 yards, dragging the deceased along with it, but who still held the horses head. Finding apparently that his position was one of extreme danger, he relaxed his hold. He had scarcely done so, however, when he missed his footing, and fell heavily to the ground. The affrighted animal feeling itself at liberty, rushed down the hill, and dragged the two off wheels of the wagon over the unfortunate mans head and breast. At the foot of the hill, the body of the wagon and hinder wheels became separated from the front portion, and was hurled with great force against the wall close beside the Catholic Chapel. The horse, carrying with it the shafts and the two remaining wheels, continuing its way to the Ship Tavern, was there arrested in its flight, happily without injuring any other person.
The carrier was speedily conveyed to his home, and was soon attended by Drs. Halliwell and Fearnley. On examining him it was found that his chest had been crushed by the wheels, several of the ribs being crushed down upon the lungs and heart, rendering all hope of saving his life impossible. He continued sinking till eight in the evening, when death put an end to his sufferings.
A man named Ellis, who aided to convey the deceased home after the accident, and who had witnessed the whole affair, says that if the slipper and front chain had been attached the accident could hardly have taken place. In this opinion we are unable to concur. It is possible that the after flight of the horse might have been to some extent retarded had the chain been on, but we are very doubtful if it would have contributed in the slightest degree to prevent the rapid descent of the wagon down the hill. On the contrary, the iron on the wheel would in all probability have carried the vehicle over the snow with the ease with which a skate goes over ice. We heard it said also that great blame is attached to the Assistant-Surveyor for not causing the road to be covered with ashes. But much as we deplore the sad results we have recorded, we cannot see that any censure can with reason be applied to the official in question. It is quite unusual to do anything of the kind in the middle of the road. In fact, we never heard of an instance where the authorities in any place caused the highway to be covered in the way suggested. It may, of course be a suggestion for the Board of Health to discuss how far that suggestion may be acted upon in the future; but in justice to Mr. Wood we do think it is too bad to visit him with reprobation for not doing that which had never been done previously.
We regret to state that the deceased, who was only 28 years of age, has left behind him a wife. We can not close this notice without stating that he was much respected in the neighbourhood, and by others who knew him, not a few of whom had seen him in Dawgreen immediately before starting in high spirits and all of innocent mirth.

Canadian Cricket Association
ESTABLISHED MARCH 29, 1692
INCORPORATED UNDER THE LAWS OF CANADA, APRIL 1st, 1968
K.A. AUTY TROPHY,
SYMBOL OF CRICKET SUPREMACY IN NORTH AMERICA
By Kevin E. Boller
In November 1961 a most historical meeting took place at the Badminton and Racket Club in Toronto when the President of the USACA, John I. Marder was entertained by the CCA President Lewis J.H. Gunn. Also in attendance was the Canadian secretary Donald King and J.W. (Jimmy) Chappel a CCA Board member. At this meeting it was agreed to revive the International Series and as a result the famous contest reappeared in the summer of 1963. A handsome silver trophy was presented for the competition by the United States Cricket Association in memory of K.A. Auty, who for many years had been a driving force in American cricket, mainly around the Chicago area.
Karl Andre Auty was born at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England in July 1878 and was educated at the Wheelwright Grammar School in Dewsbury, the Sorbonne University in Paris and at Nottingham University, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
Upon leaving Nottingham University he was employed by the Brush Electrical Engineering Company at Loughborough and in Lancashire between the years 1900-1907.
In 1909 he emigrated to Vancouver on the west coast of Canada where he was employed by the British Columbia Railway Company as Power and Contract Manager from 1909 until 1915.
In 1915 Karl moved to Chicago, Illinois where he was employed by the Commonwealth Edison Company as Sales Manager until his retirement in 1946.
Karl Auty was an active cricketer until well into his sixties, having a reputation as an excellent fielder. He was President of the Chicago Cricket Club and the Illinois Cricket Association for 25 years and did a great deal to promote cricket in the area. He was also founder and President of the Illinois Rugby Football Union.
Karl was a man of many talents, for some years he was publisher of a newspaper "The British American" and "The Illinois Cricket Annual". Through the years he built up a magnificent collection of cricket books and memorabilia. One prize in the collection is the scrap book of the famous test cricketer and movie actor Sir Charles Aubrey Smith who did much to promote cricket in California with the Hollywood Cricket Club. This valuable collection is now held in the K.A. Auty Library at Ridley College, St. Catharines which is located in southern Ontario, Canada.
Karl Andre Auty passed away from a heart attack in Chicago on November 30, 1959 at the age of 81.
